Selvedge Rider Jacket
The Selvedge rider jacket was created as a two part 'set' with the pleated rider jeans. My idea was to create two juxtaposing items of clothing that went against their normal silhouettes. As for the denim jackets, usually they are comprised of a distressed or faded denim throughout the entire garment. They are tried and true to their origin, as they were initially created for farmers and laborers to workin the fields. However, as time has passed on, denim jackets have become more and more fashionable, especially those with recognizable details, such as a corduroy collar. Denim jackets with corduroy collars are more of a statement piece in comparison to your type I, II, and III jackets, but I have always felt that even still, they don't have a place in high fashion. I would never expect a to see these denim jackets with corduroy collars on the runway or in a high end space. Thus the selvedge rider jacket was born. I created it to essentially upscale the silhouette. I wanted this jacket to exist within a date night scenario or a runway to a fashion show. I did so by first sourcing a selvedge denim that was surplus form an LA designer. I then gave the most recognizable features with an added leather collar and 3 plackets on the front. I find the look of buttons or zippers can really take away from how clean a garment can look, so the plackets were added as a way to hide them. The same premise was used when I decided to add welt pockets to the front. I wanted the garment to lay very slim and quiet from a distance. I also added cuffs that resemble those of a dress shirt. With 2 buttons on the cuff, the wearer can tighten or loosen the cuff, or even roll it up in the same fashion you would a dress shirt. I then finished it off with real brass buttons to contrast the dark selvedge denim but tie in well with the tone of the leather. Overall this jacket has a drop shoulder and a more cropped fit to give it a clean look for you to go toe to toe with a celebrity.
