Our Lady of Guadalupe Welding Cap
I purposely made this after the tie to keep the two religious pieces together in the collection. The religion inspiration is obviously very clear, but a lot of inspiration was mainly influenced from my Mexican background. The Virgin Mary or Lady of Guadalupe is a very significant figure that can be seen all across Mexico. Funny enough I think I see this the most often in candle form. I've always loved this artwork and was very excited to paint my own. I actually completely free handed this drawing and finished it with some acrylic paint. If it's not clear by now, a lot of my work is inspired by my work as an engineer and a lot of that this past summer included work alongside welders — hence the welding cap. Welders wear these caps underneath the masks for comfort and protection from sparks. The final piece of inspo came from one of my favorite brands in Kapital, they released a necktie in SS24 with the Virgin Mary on it. For the photoshoot I intentionally wore a wife beater with a pair of Nike Cortez to lean into that 'Chicano Culture'. The pictures were taken on my iPhone and edited in photoshop/lightroom.
